Obituary

Alonzo (Butch) Cooper, Jr. was the second child gifted from God to Alonzo and Flora (Perkins) Cooper, Sr. They welcomed his birth on March 14, 1948, in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

He was known to be an intelligent, generous, helpful, and kind-hearted individual. He attended Douglas Elementary School and Historic Langston High School where he grew to love music by playing trombone and drums. Butch flourished and his light-hearted attitude shined forth during his high school years as he played in the band and was a member of the Langston High School Bulldogs football and basketball teams. After leaving Langston, Butch married Emily, his high school sweetheart, they both left home and he joined the U.S. Army where he excelled as a Missile Control Operator in an Air Force unit during the Vietnam War era. When his tour of duty ended, Butch explored career opportunities with International Business Machines (IBM). Ultimately, he pursued a lifelong career studying the technical aspects of various office/business/gaming machines and as a Computer Technician.  Alonzo devoted his life to providing a happy, healthy, and successful life for his wife and two children and indeed, he did. After his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends and achieved the status of an ultimate horseman.

On Tuesday, January 30, 2024, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Alonzo Cooper, Jr. expired at the age of 75. The loss of his presence will be forever palpable. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo Cooper, Sr. and Flora Perkins Cooper; his grandparents Robert Perkins and Cynthia Dillingham Perkins; his younger brother, Gary Cooper; and several family members and close friends.

He leaves a loving family to cherish many memorable moments including his wife of 56 years Emily Ruth Howard Cooper, his daughter Tamara Y. Cooper (Jamec) Blue, his son Alonzo Cooper III; his older sister, Barbara Ann Cooper Jones. Also left to mourn his passing are his grandchildren Alonzo Cooper IV, Sirintos Cooper, and Christian Blue; his in-laws, Hattie Louise Howard (Herman) Braxton, brother-in-law, Pastor Joseph P. Lewis and sister-in-law, Mae Howard; niece and nephews Kim Cooper(Harold) Hall, Michael A. Prowell, Gary Cooper, Jr., and a host of other relatives and friends.  Special mention must also be given to all of his Langston High schoolmates and lifelong friends.
