Charles Leonard
Butler
Feb 3, 1934 — Feb 28, 2026
Charles Butler, 92, was born February 3, 1934, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Ezekel Lowe and Minnie L. Tweedle. He answered God's call on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at the Methodist Richardson Medical Center in Richardson, Texas.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Minnie L. Tweedle and Ezekel Lowe, stepfather, John L. Tweedle Sr., stepbrother, John L. Tweedle Jr. (Jackie), daughter, Jena Denise Floyd (GiGi), and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Growing up in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Charles was a product of the Hot Springs School District, attending Goldstein Elementary School and Langston High School. He proudly graduated from the All-Black Langston High School in 1953 and was awarded an athletic football scholarship to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, "Illini Country," graduating with a BS and MS degrees in 1957 and 1958, respectively. He later earned a secondary principal certification in 1975 from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Soon after earning his master's degree, Charles was offered the head coach job at Langston High School by Mr. Henderson, the principal at Langston, which he was delighted to accept. Charles was thrilled that he was able to return to his high school alma mater. He remained at Langston for 12 years, where he coached with much success, "The Mighty Bulldogs" football team, as well as other sports.
In 1968, the 9th through 12th-grade students at Langston High were transferred to Hot Springs High School. Charles stayed at Langston as a coach for the remaining junior high students. In 1970, Langston High closed, and Charles joined the coaching staff at Hot Springs High School for two years. He became a middle school principal in 1972 and remained in that capacity for 22 years, later retiring from this position and the Hot Springs School District in 1974.
Charles was an avid sportsman; he loved all sports. He loved to fish and considered himself to be the ultimate "Barbecue PitMaster." More than that, Charles loved his profession as a teacher/coach/principal, for each position allowed him to be a positive role model for the young male students he coached.
Charles married Jeanie Perkins Butler on August 12, 1966, in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He was the father of two sons, Bobby Jones and Anthony Butler, and one daughter, Jena Denise Butler (GiGi).
Chuck accepted Christ and was baptized at the Visitors Chapel AME Church under the leadership of Pastor Clarence V. Boyd. He sang in the Visitors Chapel Young Adult Choir for many years.
Charles and Jeanie relocated in 1997 to Richardson, Texas, where they united with the North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship Church under Dr. Leslie Smith, the Senior Pastor. Charles was active in the church Youth Mentoring Program and the Men in Worship Choir. In addition, he was active in the Brotherhood of the Cup, Operation Oasis, and participated in the Disciple Bible Study Program.
Charles leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Jeanie of 59 years, sons, Bobby Jones, of Maryville, Illinois, and Anthony Butler of Hot Springs, Arkansas, granddaughter, Nikki Byrd (Jabari), grandson, Phillip Floyd Jr., four great- grandchildren: Elijah Byrd, Aaliyah Byrd, Raylynn Floyd, and GiGi Floyd, all residents of Texas, two brothers-in-law, Abram Perkins (Allene) of Pacific, Missouri and Jimmy Perkins of Hot Springs Arkansas, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
