Obituary

Dorothy Ree Hunter, 92 of Hot Springs, AR transitioned on Wednesday, October 11, 2023. Dorothy was born on February 9, 1931, in Round Pond, AR to Sammie Lee and Margaret Adkins.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Oscar Hunter Jr., her parents, her brothers LC, Sammie Lee, Felix, David, and Joe, her sister Lula Mae, and her granddaughter Angelica Danyelle.

Dorothy graduated High School from Christ Church Episcopal School and professed hope in Christ at an early age at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Round Pond, AR. Dorothy married Oscar Hunter Jr. on June 11, 1950, and they remained married for 72 years until his death in June 2022.

Upon moving to Hot Springs Dorothy became a member of St. Paul Baptist Church and later was a founding member of St. Thomas Chapel Baptist Church where she made sure her eight children had the foundation for a lasting relationship with God. She later joined Eureka Baptist Church where she was an active member of the Deaconess Board, choir, and Pastor's Staff As her health failed she joined Union Baptist Church with her children.

She was a devoted homemaker who worked several jobs outside the home off and on but her family was her joy. She also worked in the community and was one of the first African-American poll workers during elections.

Dorothy was a gifted quilter and she loved sharing her gift with everyone, as a result, her quilts are all across this county. She was featured along with other local quilters in the book A Communion of the Spirits-African American Quilters, Preservers and their Stories by Roland L. Freeman.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters Paulette Hunter Riley, Barbara Hunter Cooper, Gloria Hunter Allen Glover, Patricia Hunter Crosslin, Denise Hunter Gentry, and Felicia Hunter, her sons Oscar Hunter III (Nancy) and Felix A. Hunter (Courtney), thirteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, her caregiver/family Ms. Al (Algenette Hayes) and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The funeral will be Monday, October 16, 2023, visitation will be one hour prior to the service at 11:00 AM at 219 Gulpha Street Hot Springs, AR 71901.
