Obituary

On February 17, 2021, the Lord called home his faithful servant Elizabeth Jane McMillan after a short stay at CHI St. Vincent Hospital, where she was a victim of COVID-19.

Elizabeth, affectionately known as Liz, was a lifelong resident of Hot Springs, residing in an area of south Hot Springs known as Tweedletown. She was born to  Willie and Josephine Ticer on July 24, 1930. She attended and graduated from, historic Langston High School, where she was a drum major in the marching band. After high school, she married Walter P. McMillan of Quitman, TX, and began a family. To that union was born two children, Olivia Jeanne McMillan and Darrell Pinkston McMillan. Later in her life, she married Edgar Lee Atwater.

Elizabeth was employed throughout her lifetime as a housekeeper for several affluent families in the Hot Springs area and Texas.  She was a lifelong member of Greater Ebenezer Baptist Church, serving as the church treasurer, secretary,  choir member, and on many hospitality committees. And Elizabeth was very fond of her Pink Table at the church's Annual Cotton Dress Tea. She was an annual participant in fundraising causes, such as the American Heart Association, and would walk door to door in the neighborhood to help her children with their school fundraising candy sales. In addition to her culinary skills, she mastered German Chocolate cakes, pound cakes, oatmeal cookies, gumbo, and many other baked goods and dishes. Elizabeth also enjoyed producing elaborate holiday feasts for her family. Elizabeth also was known for her exquisite fashion sense and loved sewing, dancing, and entertaining. She loved spending countless hours gardening and maintaining her well-manicured lawn. Elizabeth was a strict disciplinarian and taught her children and grandchildren to be respectful of others and to value school. She was also a proud PTA member. Much later in life, she had several health battles. Dementia took its toll for several years and it was her family that took loving care of her.

Her sisters - Maxine Glover of Milwaukee, WI, and Willie Mae Pleasants of Hot Springs - preceded her in her homegoing journey.

Elizabeth leaves to cherish her memories her beloved daughter, Olivia Pruitt of Hot Springs, and son, Darrell McMillan of Baltimore, MD; and her grandchildren, Swazy  (Stephanie) Pruitt of Hot Springs, Sonja Elizabeth Marshall of Little Rock, Damon McMillan of Kansas City, MO., Kunta Clayton of Phoenix, AZ, and Arielle Elise Nye of Harrisburg, PA. She also leaves behind eleven great-grandchildren, five nieces, three nephews, and many extended family and friends.
