Obituary

Deacon Herbert Jones, age 101, of Hot Springs, Arkansas, peacefully transitioned from this life on Sunday, September 8, 2024. Born on April 26, 1923, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, to Joseph and Eva Jones.

Deacon Jones was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Jones, his parents, and three brothers: Toby, Otis, and Jason Jones. He was also predeceased by two sisters, Lou Norris and Everlee Weathers.

Deacon and his family relocated to Hot Springs in the early 1940s, where he met and married his beloved wife, Florence.

Deacon Jones committed his life to serving the Lord, at a young age. He began his service as a Deacon at Saint Thomas Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Thomas. Later, he followed his close friend, Pastor Rev. Donald Crossley, to Saint Mark Baptist Church, where he remained a dedicated member and Deacon until his passing. He was an active member of the Brotherhood at Saint Mark and was fondly known as the "Candy Man" for his joyful habit of sharing candy with fellow congregation members of all ages, bringing warmth and happiness to those around him.

Deacon Jones's devotion to his family, pastor, and church was unwavering. One of his greatest joys was visiting nursing homes to spread cheer through candy and prayer, a ministry he faithfully continued until the age of 99.

Deacon Herbert Jones leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service that will forever be treasured by those who had the honor of knowing him. He retired from Sonny's Parking Lot, but his lasting impact on his community and loved ones remains.

He leaves behind four loving sisters: Helen Steward, Ruby Franklin, Georgia Jones, and Barbara Whittaker, as well as one brother, Eugene Jones. He also cherished his special relationship with his four Godchildren: Ericka Knox-Mahone, Demetria McCollum, Donna Crossley, and Donald Crossley Jr. Additionally, he is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and a dear friend, Charlotte Anderson.

The funeral will be held on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 11:30. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at St Mark Baptist Church, 542 Crescent Ave, Hot Springs, AR 71901.
