James Dennis Gulley, 81 of Hope, AR passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2022. He was born in Buena Vista, AR, on October 11, 1940, to Dennis Lee Gulley and Essie Elliott Gulley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Norma Jean Todd, his wife, Marjorie Richardson Gulley, his Dad Harvey Scott, Sister, Esterlean Scott, Brother, T.J. Scott, and Special Nephew, Billy J Todd Sr.
At an early age, James joined Bethel A.M.E. Church in Buena Vista AR. He graduated from Blevins Training High School and was a licensed welder and a barber. He enjoyed serving his customers and mentoring young men with whom he came in contact. His advice to young barbers was, "Don't walk off and leave your customer in a chair; finish the job before you leave." He worked at Lone Star (12 years) and Red River (16 years) in Texarkana, AR. After retirement, he became a full-time barber in Texarkana.
Mr. Gulley, also known as Uncle Jay or Uncle James, was a faithful member at Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church where he regularly attended Sunday School and Worship services. He was the first one to arrive at church every Sunday. He loved God, his Pastor, and his Church Family.
He leaves to cherish his memory one daughter: Tracy Hildreth (Charles) of Texarkana, AR; three sons: Jimmie Diaz Gulley (Deborah) of Milwaukee, WI, Dearl Wayne McPeak (Sou Chay) of San Diego, CA, and Williams Jones of Washington DC; seven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; four sisters: Shirley Williams (Sam) and Gracie Grasty (Tom) of Greensboro, NC, Gertie Ogburn (Lee) of Flint MI, Dorothy Davis of Madison, WI; two brothers: James Alfred Scott of Little Rock, AR and James Earl Scott (Delisa) of Madison, WI; Special Niece: Carolyn Todd of Prescott, AR; Sisters-in-Law: Dorothy Wheatfall (Bobby), Mary Staggers (James), Arlene McGill (Odie), Joyce Robinson (Robert); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends including Special Friend O. D. McFadden of Blevins, AR.
