John was best known for his kindness, gentle spirit, and work ethic. John has always been a hard worker, not only working on the farm but also driving the school bus while in high school. Not only was he a dedicated, careful driver taking care of the students on the bus, but he also made sure the bus was cleaned inside and shining outside. He was careful to wash the bus at least twice each week! He always wanted to be working or doing something other than sitting around. In retirement that something was mainly for other people, whether it was to help out cutting a neighbor's lawn or stopping by to offer a hand at cleaning up his favorite barber shop; he would be there to assist and share in the comradery of those he enjoyed being around. Although his seat at the table for family dinners and special occasions will be empty and his gentle smile will be missing, we thank God for the opportunity to have known him. He will always live in our hearts.

John worked 30+ years for Weyerhaeuser before retiring in 2002. During his working years and even after he kept busy by serving as an usher, ordained as a deacon at an early age, bus driver, and faithful attendee of Greater St. Paul Baptist Church where he served and worshiped for over 60 years. John grew up on a 120-acre farm where he learned to work hard, care for others, share gracefully, and love deeply. At an early age, he learned to pick cotton, plow the fields, plant corn, harvest potatoes, and do many other jobs as necessary. Growing up, John enjoyed playing pranks on his siblings and laughing about it. He had a love for the outdoors, whether it be working outside or just walking. He was an astute yardman, having an eye for lawn treatment and care. In his younger adult years, he operated a lawn service business with several accounts that he serviced during the weekends and many times during his regular work weeks.

Early in 1977 John met Idella Harris and began a relationship that led to a marriage on Sunday, June 4th of 1978 at 5:00 pm at Horn Missionary Methodist Church in Alamo, GA. This relationship lasted for over 40+ years, enduring many ups and very few downs, travel, and laughter until his passing, solidifying the meaning 'til death do us part.
